Saul Ewing Creates Business Succession Program

Saul Ewing has formalized a program to help family-owned businessed survive the transition from one generation of leadership to the next.

The firm's business succession practice group, led by partner Robert H. Louis, created a six-part plan that has lawyers acting as a consultant for the firm's many family-owned business clients.

"I guess we are as much consultants as anything else," Louis said.

There are about 10 attorneys in the firm that will work on this program and they practice in the areas of real estate, estate law and business, Louis said.

"We realized we were doing more than just legal work in this practice," Louis said. "It has a lot to do with 'Tell me your story, Mr. Client.'"

Louis said the firm's market from Newark, N.J. to Washington, D.C., is comprised of several family-owned businesses that make up a "significant" amount of Saul Ewing's work.  That is especially the case in the firm's Philadelphia and Baltimore offices, he said.  Louis could not specify what percentage of the revenue comes from those clients.

The plan consists of discovery, goal identification, transition plan creation, tax and estate planning, plan implementation and on-going analysis.
